The link above is to a great documentary about the storm that destroyed New Orleans and parts of Louisiana. Back in 2005 I was living in Nova Scotia, and I know the power of hurricanes - we had Hurricane Juan blast through (Level 2 only) and I was without power for 1 week!
I've had a number of tropical storms hit through when I lived in the Maritimes, including White Juan which was a MONSTER storm that happened mere MONTHS after the hurricane blasted through.
They are scary as hell. The winds and storm surge are very intense and cause massive flooding. I think during white Juan we had a death from an ambulance / EMT person who got crushed by a tree while he was inside the ambulance. Sad story.
