Roy Jones Jr. Loses to Joe Calzaghe - Time to retire
Last night on HBO PPV Roy Jones Jr. fought the unbeatable Joe Calzaghe in Madison Square Garden. Although Jones was able to knock down Joe in the first round, he was able to get back up and somehow out punch Roy Jones Jr.
I'm a huge fan of Roy Jones Jr., but I think the time for him to retire is now. His lightning quick speed - came in flashes last night. The footwork that allowed him to move outside of corners - was gone. Instead he just stood there while Calzaghe decided to lampoon him and make faces and hold his hands behind his back. I think he was trying to get back at Jones for his own showmanship, but honestly it looked like he was acting like the cocky asshole.

10 years ago if Jones had fought Calzaghe it would have been a different story. I am sure Jones would have knocked Joe out. Jones was also cut in the 7th round (for the first time in his long career), but that didn't stop him from coming forward. I think the way to beat Calzaghe is to pressure him, make him fight walking backwards. Instead, Jones relied on counter punching and returned only 1 punch for every 5 landed by Joe.
Was it worth $49.99? No. But for many fans it might have been the last fight for Roy. It certainly was the last fight for Joe Calzaghe - he retires now. As for Roy Jones Jr. fighting Bernard Hopkins - if Roy has any common sense he will walk away from that. Behop would probobly win that fight on sheer guts alone.
And that's that.
