June Car Month 2015
Just like the Ford Pinto Cruising Wagon above, we've all driven shitty cars at one point or another. I remember shitty cars, like the Chevy Cavalier, Pontiac Grand AM, Chevy Vega, Cadillac Cimmeron, etc. You get the idea.
Today the scope of really crappy cars is very limited. Most manufacturers today release relatively decent vehicles. The largest differences between the shitty cars and good cars is bound into these areas:
* Reliability
* Performance
* Safety
* Styling/Design aesthetics
* Brand name recognition
Back in the 1980's there were LOTS of crappy cars - both domestic and import. By the time the 1990's and 2000's came up, import vehicles were starting to surpass domestics with reliability and resale value. Brands that were ridiculed as "Jap crap" in the 1970's became prestige brands - Honda, Toyota, and Nissan. All three released their own "luxury" brands such as "Acura, Lexus, and Infinity".
Probably the biggest turds today are the smaller automakers like Mitsubishi - who made the atrocious vehicle called the Mitsubishi Mirage. Dated looking, it rides on tiny wheels and a terrible design.
Remember Suzuki? Pretty much out of business. How about SMART cars? Awful, terrible pieces of crap. Does anyone recall the Suzuki Samurai? Yep, a rolling deathtrap.
Stay tuned, I'll be bringing up more discussions soon.
