She guilted me into buying donuts, so I did the same to her
A week ago I had sent an e-mail out to the corporate users about a software update. A sharp-eyed geologist lady caught the fact that I used an old logo from the company that changed last year. "Because you used an old logo, you have to buy donuts tomorrow morning" she wrote. I knew her, and she was dead serious, but joking.
The next day, I bought a dozen donuts and some timbits. "You're my fave" she said to me with a smile. I got nervous. I haven't really interacted with women this way since Theresa died last September. Here was a woman who was very pretty, exceptionally smart, and suddenly she is bugging the hell out of me?
Fast-forward a few days and I chat with her. I say "Well since you've successfully guilted the entire office over the past few years to buy donuts, the least you could do is buy a dozen". I held out my fist to seal the deal with her. She reached out and we bumped.
That was sacred, I said. The next day I showed up at her office to apply gentle pressure. It was easy because all I had to do was smile at her and say a few sweet words. I sound like a manipulative asshole, but remember, SHE is the pro in the office here. I'm just acting (mostly).
I manage to sweet talk her into buying donuts for the office. The guys in the back office cheer and can't believe it. Two hours go by and no donuts appear. I'm starting to give up on her. But just at the last moment before 11, she appears in my office with the most delicious looking donut and gives it to me!
"Don't ever say I never bought you a donut!" she said with a mean look. I held out my hand and shook hers. I took my other hand and clasped it over, looked her in the eyes, and said thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Most people don't expect a special handshake, and you have to be careful when and how to use it. I just genuinely wanted to show her how deeply I appreciated her gift. As she walked away, I told her "Don't tell anyone, but you're my new fave". She stops, looks back and says "You're my fave too".
Hanging on the promises, of the songs of yesterday.... here I go again...
