Moving Home?

George's Island, Nova Scotia, 2008

There was a common theme when I lived in Nova Scotia years ago - people would leave the province for jobs, then eventually return decades later to retire. I think this happens everywhere, but for some people, it can become an awful trap. When you return from a place you've never lived in multiple decades, your perspective changes over time.

Not only does the old home change, but the people do, too. The people you knew 10,20, or 30+ years ago are not the same you were friends with in your early 20's.

Home is where you put a roof over your head. If you're stressing over to whether go home or not: Think it over. Do you really feel the need to go home? Would changing your home scenery to an old memory still be the same? People are comforted by familiarity. If you're convinced moving home is the proper thing to do, then go for it.

In my life I've changed entire provinces about three times. Each place was completely different than the rest. Having lived in 3 provinces spanning 29 years? Unbelievable. I would never have believed it if I told my past self.

If stressing over a move bothers you, then don't move. It's as simple as that.

And don't believe anyone if they tell you'll be happier moving back there.

You likely won't be.

Peace
