New Years Eve - Should you Travel if a blizzard is approaching?

 

According to Accuweather and Environment Canada, the east coast of the US and Canada will be experiencing a major winter storm during the next 24-36 hours. You may be thinking "Should I go out for New Year's eve celebrations?". To answer your question, you must answer these:

1. Are you preparing to spend the night at the place you are partying at?

2. Have you equipped your car with an emergency kit before you travel?

3. Will you be driving before the storm actually begins?

If you answered YES to all of the questions above, then sure, travel to your New Year's eve party. But if you are driving tonight and are going to be taking a cab to get home.... don't even think for a second that you'll be able to do this. Even if you have your own humongous 4x4 truck, blizzards are very nasty and your chance of being killed is extremely high. 

You can die a number of interesting ways in a winter blizzard:

- Exposure due to being stuck in the snow

- Head-on collision due to bad road conditions

- Off-road accident (ie. ditch, water, etc)

- Collision with snow removal (plow) machines

- Drunk drivers actually hitting and killing you

- Getting stuck in the snow, and dying from carbon monoxide poisoning due to poor ventilation

- Attacked by homeless people who have been converted to zombies like in 28 days later (very rare)

My advice to anyone thinking about going out on New Year's eve just before a major storm: Don't bother. Unless you're going to a party where it's a once-in-a-lifetime situation, it's not worth the risk. You know, after thinking back on all my previous New Years Eve parties, some were good but overall it was just another party.
