William-Adolphe Bouguereau

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bouguereau is one of the most fascinating artists I have ever read about. Just looking at his art is unnerving: It's so realistic, contains so much emotion, you really can't explain what's going and how he captured the magic. I'll post a few pictures of what I find really fascinating. Click any to enlarge.

 The Song of Angels

What is most remarkable about this painting is that there are no brush lines. It's been smoothed out by the artist. Notice the eyes of the angels, two of them are looking directly at the baby.

Now examine the mother's foot. Notice the dirt?

In detail further, you can see the cloud-like texture of the clothing  - including realistic drop shadows and radiant light.

The next one is titled "Tobias saying Goodbye to his father".
Notice the woman's eyes and see the hand holding her son's hand.

The mother in the background is distraught, you can make out the veins of her hands.

Pieta.
Obviously it's a rendition of Christ with his mother. The dead grief stare of the mother is solemn.

The level of detail paid to the urn at the bottom is astounding. You can even make out the mother's foot just under the shadow of her son. Dante and Virgil in Hell. Now don't get me wrong. I am not a religious nut case. I am not promoting relgious beliefs - far from it. I happened to stumble upon this incredible picture the other night while doing some google searches on Dante.

Clearly you can see the torture, although it's presented in a way that isn't very palatable. Look at the blood in the man's chest.
