Calgary Downtown Power Outage 2014
Last Saturday an underground transformer caught fire and burned out a huge section of Calgary's downtown power grid. This includes fibre-optic internet cables and 8 kilometers of high voltage power cables.
The result? About half of downtown has been black since last Saturday. Many businesess are down and the best estimate is Thursday before power is turned on.
I'd hate to be living downtown, because there is no hotel rooms available in the city. Thank god it's still warm out.
Calgary Chamber of Commerce president Adam Legge said he doesn't feel the power outage will have a major impact on Calgary's economy.
"From a bigger economic picture, I don't think we'll see any impairment to the economy," he said, adding the outage is more hassle than crisis.
"It's a small enough zone -- small enough number of companies that it won't, in the grand scheme of things, affect our economy in any way."
Legge said that estimates suggest that upwards of 2,000 businesses and 10,000 employees are affected by the outage.
The city will continue to maintain an information centre for displaced residents at the Mewata Armoury at 11 St. and 9 Ave. SW.
