Laid Up

Well, it was a good run: 2300 kilometers on the old boosted board has come to an end. Last Wednesday during my lunch ride, I was on the bike path going 40% speed and hit a section of road that hid dips and snake-type abberations which caused me to lose balance and try to land on my knees. Instead I landed like a sack of meat on my leg, just under my right knee.

Immediately, I broke my Tib and Fib bones and knew it because I couldn't stretch my leg out. I'm waiting to have an operation to remove the external fixater devices and put permanent pins and screws & plates in my right leg.

I'm at an age now where riding these things are not longer possible. I am an expert skateboarder but a terrible person at landing falls. The medical system in Canada is great, I was scooped up by an ambulance and they knocked me out twice to stretch my leg and also set temporary pins in my leg.

I'll be selling my board once I get home for a fraction of the cost, all gear too. A buddy of mine from Montreal is in town helping me, and I hope to have an operation soon. They keep post poning because of swelling or other Stampede-related accidents.

Sitting in a hospital bed with pins in your bones is no joke. To consider further skateboarding would be selfish and an unnecessary risk I can no longer take. I'm going to find another hobby, I'll certainly miss skateboarding but as I approach 50, I think I got out lucky.

I had all my gear on and I still managed to seriously damage my body. That alone cemented my decision on not skateboarding again. I'm used to hospitals from other loved ones, but the last time I was in one was about 20 years ago in Winnipeg.

You'd think pain would be excruciating having pins drilled into your bones, but if you just sit still it's not bad. The fracture blisters appeared 2 days after the crash. The hospital food is mostly garbage, but I look at it as paying for my sins.

If you decided to skateboard, good for you. Please know the risks and associated injuries and even death can occur. In that I count myself lucky. I feel terrible for breaking my bones but it was a total fluke and I wasn't even going full speed. Sometimes things just happen.

Stay safe. I hope to be out of the hospital in the next week or so. I should be able to work remotely from home. Goddamm it.
