Lunch with Donovin!
Donovin and I worked together 8 years ago when I was at Quest Software. He moved to Calgary 5 years ago, we met once. I apologized for not meeting up with him after that. I explained that Theresa's health took a serious decline and he understood.
It was nice to go out and have a lunch with a friend. We spoke about what we both did during those years. He is heading back to Nova Scotia with his fiance, It reminded me of 2001, when I left Calgary and drove across the country to live in Nova Scotia with Theresa.
When I moved to Nova Scotia, I worked for a new startup called Abridean, it was a company doing automatic provisioning of users and exchange accounts. I got laid off from there, got a shitty job at a radio station for 6 months, then got hired by Quest Software. And through it all Theresa was there for me.
"How have the years gone so quickly?" I asked Donovin. He is in his early 30's now. I'm 50, I remember this age. You don't realize how good things were until they're gone.
My family didn't like that, but I live my life for myself and help my family as often and when I can. So I don't feel guilty about moving out of Manitoba at all.
It's a shame he's leaving. I feel sad, but also happy he is going to a place closer to his family.
I read online that the owner of Bud the Spud died the other day. I remember going near that truck during my lunch walks. Sometimes I would actually go and buy a hotdog, or fries. They were good but greasy. It made me think about my own life. I am free but in a prison of my mind.
A prison so well built no one has ever escaped it. The sad fact is, people in the prison don't even know they are in one.
