COVID-19
Unknown COVID-19 transmission is happening in Calgary and Alberta over all. Just yesterday we had +125 new cases, and the day before, +105, then +70's for the earlier days.
What this means is continued vigilance is going to be extremely important. With the NHL coming up here, having Edmonton as a "hub city", we are at risk for more outbreaks.
It's impossible to stop completely. We can't shut the economy down indefinitely. But Alberta needs to do a better job protecting seniors and people at risk. Add on the combative attitude from the Health Minister Tyler Shandro, you have a perfect storm of shit.
Currently there is no restrictions when you travel from BC, AB, and SK to Manitoba. You do not have to quarantine - yet. This was removed a month ago. COVID outbreaks in Manitoba seem to be at a very low simmer.
However, compared to the United States of America, Canada is doing pretty good right now. But we shouldn't get lost in self-righteous congratulations: We are literally a few super-spreaders away from a complete uncontrolled outbreak.
The anti-mask attitude has me puzzled. I don't understand the resistance to wearing one. You can wear a bandanna with paper towel between the fabric, it provides decent protection: Not perfect, but good enough to get by in a grocery store.
I've collected all the different bandanna colors you can buy from 7-11. Sad, I know, but it gives me about 24 bandannas to choose from. Simply tear off a piece of paper town, put it between the 2 layers, and bring up to your face like so:
The downside is you don't look very friendly wearing a bank robber mask. It's far more comfortable than my older conventional mask. I can wash them and re-use them cheaply enough. When I go out there is a hidden tension. I have to move quickly because I do not want to be caught hanging around people in the grocery store. I just want to get in and out, very fast.
The virus is going to be here for quite a long time, until a vaccine is distributed. Every time I get a tickle on the throat or a cough, I nervously wonder if "This is t?". I don't want to give anyone this disease.
Continuing vigilance is going to be especially difficult considering the summer weather and natural instincts for people to gather together and have fun.
Old towels and t-shirts can be used if you can't afford a bandanna. It just feels weird having a piece of fabric around my neck. Several co-workers have teased me about it. I don't care; I'm not wearing it for fashion; I'm doing it to protect myself and others.
The other day, a senior citizen in Southern Ontario assaulted a grocery store clerk because he was told he would have to wear a free mask to get into the store. Why was that necessary, to hit someone because they are trying to protect you?
That covid-idiot was shot dead by police an hour later. He was so enraged by being asked to wear a mask he decided to have a shoot-out with police.
No fucks given from here. Good riddance.
Stay safe!
