Time Flies Quickly
"If the Lord spares us another day." Marion said, taking a quick puff on her cigarette before turning to Theresa. I nodded my head in agreement. "My son" she said looking at the ceiling, waving a small fan in the air. It was 30C in that apartment and we were hot.
Theresa stood by the doorway, impatiently waiting for me to leave and go to the cigarette store with her. "We'll get food on the way back mom!" she said, kissing her on the cheek before we left.
It was a short drive, maybe a few kilometers to the cheapest place to buy cigarettes in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The year was 2008, and we were suffering from a heat wave that hit that province with a vengeance.
We had no air conditioning to speak of. Only fans and that only pushed hot air around us. My poor mother in law, Marion, was clearly not happy with the heat. And neither was George, my father-in-law. In his early 80's, you could tell this was hell for him. "I had worse conditions int he war." he'd tell me. And I believed him.
We ended up going to John's Fish & Chips, and getting some dinners that evening. By that time, a cool breeze was coming over the ocean. We lived on Arthur street back then. A far cry from the bustle of Calgary.
I remember those times clearly. I miss them. But most of all, I miss Theresa.
I still love her very much.
Chris
